Nigella wannabes rise to Time Bank challenge
06/05/2009

A group of local girls in Camden tried out some delicious recipes on Monday in the latest of a series of classes equipping youngsters with a host of skills they can use to earn time credits through Origin’s Time Bank scheme.
The girls, aged between 10 and 14, rustled up dishes including vegetarian sushi and egg fried rice in the two-hour session which will help them earn time credits they can then use to ‘buy’ goods or services from other Time Bank members.
Since the classes began in February at Origin Housing’s Basil Jellicoe Hall in North London, girls taking part in the scheme have learnt how to give a manicure, make cushions, bake cakes and perform a Bollywood style dance. All these skills can be converted to cinema tickets, internet access, language classes or even a cake baked by another Time Bank member through time credits.
“The beauty of this project is that young people learn skills that are useful to them but which they can also use to help other people,” said Origin’s Time Bank Coordinator, Clare Davies. “And the fact that they earn time credits gives the girls extra motivation to stick at it and use the skills they’ve learnt in the community.”
The classes take place every week with different activities and are open to all girls in Camden aged 10-14. For more information, contact Clare Davies on 020 7209 3681 or email
